IDENTITY AND VIRTUAL COMMUNITY
= identity is ambiguous.
= information rather than matter.
= information spreads and diffuses.
= no law of conversation of information.

There are 4 ways develop identity online/ establishing one's identity
[I] The Account Name: Basic ID
^ it is ubiquitos
^ straightforward to the identity of the people

[II] Signature
^ most deliberate identity signals
^ language marker

[III] Contents of Posting
^ can reveal great deal more about the writer
^ example- <!> and <CAPITAL LETTER>

[IV] Language
^ show who we are and where we come from


Deceptions and Manipulations
Divides to:
*Troll _ game about identity deception
*Gender deception _ is male but use female identity
*Identity deception _ pretend professor
*Impersonation _ use other identity and spread out wrong information


Netiquette
* there are 10 practice and ethics that online users need to concern it.
(Important for EXAM)

Weekly Updated - 3rd Week

This lecturer held on 11.10.10..
The main point that discuss is 'Virtual Community'
Ms Farah show us 2 videos in class.

Community & Society
~ collective movement of a group of individuals
~ an organization or association of persons engaged in common profession, activity or interest.

Virtual Community
~ social network of individuals who interact through certain media and crossing over geographical and political boundaries to achieve and pursue mutual interest of goals.
~ 4 Characteristics
~ there are also 4 types of virtual community:

[a] internet message boards - Forum
[b] chat rooms - MSN
[c] virtual worlds - MUD
[d] Social Networking - BLOG, FB


Questions:

1) Briefly explain how the internet, how the world wide web involve and how they work.

2) Define virtual community.

3) Explain the characteristics of community internet and how it differents from the traditional community.

4) Explain and give example of various type of virtual and traditional community.

Weekly Updated - 2nd Week

2nd week was our first lecturer with Ms Farah.
The first impression that given by she is cool and fierce.
I was late for 5 minutes for that lecturer.
Ms Farah told us all about her rules and regulation during lecturer.

Well, the 1st lecturer is about the intro to cyber world, cyber space, cyber society and online communication system.
There are 6types of online communication system which are email, BBS, text chat, MUD, world wide web sites and social networking sites.
Besides, it also link to the synchronous and asynchronous communication.

Asynchronous Communication ->  means that there is an interaction but reply might take time after the interaction. For example: email.

Synchronous Communication -> means there will have feedback instantly and communication might happened in real time. For example: MSN.

And then, we been separated into 2part for each group and given a question to debate for the first tutorial.

LANGUAGE MARKER

Language marker is the symbolic identity that differentiate the people in cyber world.
As an example, most of the malaysian likes to add in "lah","loh","mah" at the end of the each sentences.
Besides, malaysian also able to understand and speak in some of the words likes ''yum cha'' and ''da bao''..
Which mean, these are the culture and symbolic of Malaysia that lets others peoples easy to know us.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Social Networking Sites

Nowadays, there are a lot of peoples get use to the social networking sites especially for Facebook, Myspace and Blogging. Social networking defines as a web-based services or a platform as an important part in internet that allow individuals to have connection with each others.

Therefore, there are a few advantages and disadvantages that using social networking sites. Firstly, keep in touch and stay connection with friends and family. We can meet up with different friends from various country and culture in the cyber world. It can grab attention and concern by others users through updating status and new articles. For example: 'I involve in an accident just now.' Within 5 minutes, then there will have a number of users will post a comment after the status had posted.

Second is learning different culture and share the information. Social networking sites allow us to be more familiar to the peoples all around the world. With this, we are able to communicate in different language, learn others country culture and share the experience through chatting.

Next, the limited safety concerns of social networking sites. We cannot deny that there are a lot of fake identity exists in cyber world. Normally, the fake users will copy the picture from the original users as their own profile picture. Then, they pretend as the original users to chat with the peoples. Besides, we can’t escape from the risks that some of the users will hack and misuse the user personal information and may publish it in anonymous website for their own interest and crime such as you tube.

Lastly, most of the social networking sites will pop out many different kinds of advertisement that we consider as spammer or virus. This may cause an effect to the user and computer too.
As a conclusion, there are many others advantages and disadvantages for social networking sites. It should be no problem if the users didn't misuse it. These are the kind of skills that people need to learn in life. In weighing the advantages and disadvantages of social networking, it's best to weigh on the side of information. After all, the lack of it has always had a devastating effect on society.
